The elected members were told by Town Manager Paddy Mahon that the Town Council had received correspondence from the Border Midlands and Western regional authority (BMW) to inform them that €1.4 million had been made available to the town for environmental, economic and social projects in the town as long as the local authority came up with 40 per cent of the matching funding for the project.

Mulroy aghast that councillors have no role to play in Westport House Masterplan

At the first in a series of Westport Town Council meetings to discuss submissions for the town’s draft development plan Fianna Fáil Councillor Brendan Mulroy commented that the “system is flawed” as elected members, “the voice of the people”, can make decisions about one part of the town but will not have a part to play until the end of the decision making process “in what goes on inside the wall of the Westport House demesne”.

Councillors moot two-way traffic system in Westport

Westport town manager Peter Hynes has said that the issue surrounding traffic in the town — which was discussed during a special meeting of Westport Town Council — is being examined, but as the town “was not designed for the car in mind” it will always mean that it will take some time in order to pass through the town. However if Westport is shortlisted for the Smarter Town Travel scheme and is in receipt of funding Mr Hynes said that cars will eventually be replaced by a larger uptake of people cycling and walking in the town, which will help alleviate traffic problems.

Lough Lannagh village could become tourist hot spot

Castlebar’s Lough Lannagh holiday village could become a mini-Trabolgan, according to Councillor Frank Durcan. Cllr Durcan put forward a motion calling on the council to upgrade the holiday village. Town manager Seamus Granahan said he would explore the possibilities of doing so, and congratulated the people who are currently running the facility on doing a good job, but warned that finances would be a stumbling block at this current time.
